About the Program

The Early Childhood Education class at Independence high school is a lab based class that houses the Lil' Cubs preschool.  The program is a hands-on learning environment for high school students in grades 10-12.  The class enables high school students to explore the possibility of a career in Early Childhood Education while enabling 20 preschoolers, ages 3 1/2-5, to benefit from their first exposure to a classroom setting.

High school students are paired primarily one-on-one with your preschooler and will work with them each preschool day to enhance their kindergarten readiness skills (We follow Loudoun County’s criteria for Kindergarten Readiness).  In addition, high school students learn to develop quality lesson plans and curriculum for preschoolers and will assume the role as teacher for the day.  Each preschool day, your child will experience age-appropriate lessons in core subjects such as math, language arts, science, and social studies.  Each month, the preschoolers will explore a new theme such as the changing seasons, community helpers, sports, nutrition and wellness, and cultures around the world.

Mrs. Cooper is the lucky teacher who gets to work with both high school and preschool students!  She couldn’t be more thrilled to be going into her sixth year at Lil' Cubs Preschool at Independence High School!  Before opening Independence, Mrs. Cooper ran the Little Knights preschool for five years at John Champe High School.

Mrs. Cooper has a Bachelor’s degree in education from Purdue University – Go Boilers! - and a Master's from Liberty University in education leadership.  Mrs. Cooper also holds both kindergarten and reading endorsements.  She has lived in Loudoun County with her family for seventeen years and loves being a Tiger at Independence!
